New DVD Technology Can Store Up to 2000 Movies

Nanotechnology researchers at the Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne have unveiled a new optical storage medium that can store up to 2000 movies on a single disc.

The new optical disc holds 10,000 times the data of a standard DVD and works by adding extra dimensions to the spectrum of the disc.

Discs currently have three spatial dimensions. By using gold nanorods Gu and colleagues were able to add two additional dimensions, one based on the colour spectrum, and the other on polarisation.

"We were able to show how nanostructured material can be incorporated onto a disc in order to increase data capacity, without increasing the physical size of the disc,'' said Min Gu, who led the team.

Because nanoparticles react to light depending on their shape, it was possible to record information in a range of different colour's wavelengths at the same physical location on the disc.

"The polarisation can be rotated 360 degrees,'' explained co-author James Chon.

"We were, for example, able to record at zero degree polarisation. Then on top of that, were able to record another layer of information at 90 degrees polarisation, without them interfering with each other,'' he said in a statement.

Commercial production of the new technology is at least 5 years off, but with something that can hold 10,000 times the storage of a regular DVD, don't expect it to be cheap!

Google Fails, Internet Stops.

While we were asleep last night it appears that Google suffered a major outage of its search, email and calendar services among other affiliated services such as YouTube and Google News.

What became glaringly apparent during this outage is that Google IS the Internet. The graph below shows the point where Google failed at roughly 10:15am ET (USA).

The graph above is from Arbor Networks who has monitoring equipment in just about every ISP across the US. This graph shows the average traffic of just 10 of the top Tier 1 and 2 ISP's in the country. It is astounding that the traffic drops from around 15Gbps down to 1Gbps at the time of the crash.

Google has yet to officially state what happen but they did equate the outage to "planes piling up" to explain the meltdown. Essentially, a core router failed causing all Google traffic to route through backup routes causing congestion. Too much congestion and the route slows to a crawl and pages will time out for the end user.

Telstra Names New CEO

Telstra has announced that Australian David Thodey will take the reins as Telstra CEO, replacing outgoing CEO Sol Trujillo who departs home to the US today. David Thodey was previously the company's group managing director for enterprise and government and was one of three candidates in the running for the top job.

Telstra Chairman Donald McGauchie has also been replaced by current board member Catherine Livingstone, effective immediately.

The changes are a welcome sign that the monopoly telco is willing to work with the Rudd government bringing a softer approach to negotiations. Industry analysts have said that for the National Broadband Network to become a reality, participation of Telstra is vital for the outcome of the project.

We'll see how the market reacts to the appointment when it opens this morning. Until then I'll give the new guy the benefit of the doubt and see if Telstra really can change or if it's all just smoke and mirrors.

Google Headed For Anti-Trust Case

Google looks set to have an anti-trust lawsuit on its hands after two US authorities said they were looking into the online giant's practices. The scene looks set for a showdown eerily similar to the anti-trust case of Microsoft in the late 90's.

Two government departments have announced they are investigating the search giant over concerns its operations are anti-competitive.

The US Federal Trade Commission this week said it was investigating whether ties between the boards of Apple and Google violated antitrust laws.

The inquiry was revealed just one week after the US Department of Justice said it was investigating Google over the terms of its deal with authors and publishers to put entire libraries on the web.

Google has said it is willing to assist the authorities in their investigations.

I'm Back!

Hey Everyone!

The website is back after a long absence and I hope you'll enjoy reading my blog postings on all things technology.

Basically my site was hacked and I have no idea how either, but people searching for me on Google would be re-directed to adult sites. It was a very nasty piece of code on my server that someone managed to place on there without my knowledge.

Anyway, as soon as I get the business side of the site back up and functional I can start blogging again. It's good to be back!
