Telstra has announced that Australian David Thodey will take the reins as Telstra CEO, replacing outgoing CEO Sol Trujillo who departs home to the US today. David Thodey was previously the company's group managing director for enterprise and government and was one of three candidates in the running for the top job.

Telstra Chairman Donald McGauchie has also been replaced by current board member Catherine Livingstone, effective immediately.

The changes are a welcome sign that the monopoly telco is willing to work with the Rudd government bringing a softer approach to negotiations. Industry analysts have said that for the National Broadband Network to become a reality, participation of Telstra is vital for the outcome of the project.

We'll see how the market reacts to the appointment when it opens this morning. Until then I'll give the new guy the benefit of the doubt and see if Telstra really can change or if it's all just smoke and mirrors.
