Google looks set to have an anti-trust lawsuit on its hands after two US authorities said they were looking into the online giant's practices. The scene looks set for a showdown eerily similar to the anti-trust case of Microsoft in the late 90's.

Two government departments have announced they are investigating the search giant over concerns its operations are anti-competitive.

The US Federal Trade Commission this week said it was investigating whether ties between the boards of Apple and Google violated antitrust laws.

The inquiry was revealed just one week after the US Department of Justice said it was investigating Google over the terms of its deal with authors and publishers to put entire libraries on the web.

Google has said it is willing to assist the authorities in their investigations.
