The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has approved the merger of Vodafone and Hutchinson Mobile to form Vodafone Hutchinson Australia (VHA).

Each company takes a 50% stake in the newly formed VHA and will continue to operate under their separate brands for the time being. The ACCC had initial reservations that the merger would lessen competition within the mobile market but came to the conclusion “it is unlikely to substantially lessen competition in the relevant markets”.

The move is great for consumers who are already enjoying great deals being pushed out by the mobile competitors and this deal puts another nail into Telstra's coffin. Telstra who has coverage of 99% of the population still seems willing to rip consumers off whilst the other players bite at their heels.

With Optus's 3G network now reaching around 96% of the population, the VHA deal will bring the same coverage and enhance the already great deals on offer. It's certainly an exciting time in mobile communications with Australian's now having a real choice in their provider.
